Philip S Cooper
1928-Jan. 30, 2024
Pleasanton, California

Philip S. Cooper passed away on January 30, 2024, at age 95. He went peacefully, in the company of his children, and with no regrets. He often said that his life had been better than he ever dreamed it could be, but his family and friends miss him terribly. Philip lived in Pleasanton for nearly 60 years and is survived by his children Ian Cooper of Orinda (Sari) and Monika Cooper of Walnut Creek (Ken), as well as his grandchildren, Zoë, Sofia and Jordan, his sister Nancy Bowman, brother Jerry Cooper, sisters- and brother-in law, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Elva, his beloved wife of more than 60 years, his brother Robert Cooper, and his parents.

Philip epitomized what it means to be a man. He was strong and tough but also compassionate and generous. He worked hard his entire life, baling hay and picking peaches and cotton in the Central Valley, 2 years in Korea with the Army, and then a lifetime as an educator. He taught high school for more than 60 years, retiring in his 60’s and then substitute teaching until he was 91! He also worked tirelessly to improve his community both through volunteer work and by advocating for what he believed in – social and economic justice were causes closest to his heart. His volunteer efforts were many, including serving on the Pleasanton Human Services Commission for 8 years (he was a charter member and chairman for 2 years), working at Open Heart Kitchen, and building more than 40 houses with Habitat for Humanity. But his family always came first and always knew they could count on him for love and support!

Fortunately, he and Elva also made time to indulge their shared passions – travel, art, music, dance, good food and good wine - for nearly 70 years. They were a true renaissance couple! Despite not having a lot of money, they travelled the world (5 continents and more than 50 countries), collected and appreciated art from a variety of cultures, were patrons of the opera and ballet, and cooked and ate many gourmet meals together. One of Philip’s particular claims to fame was as a baker – friends and family always looked forward to his fresh-baked breads around the holidays, and his dinner rolls at Thanksgiving were legendary!

We’re grateful that Philip had a wonderful life, because he really deserved it! Philip taught us – with his words, his actions, and his love – how to be a father and a man, and how to be a good person and partner in life. We continue to strive to live up to his example.

We will celebrate Philip’s life and legacy on March 23, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Lynnewood United Methodist Church, 4444 Black Avenue, Pleasanton, with a luncheon at the church to follow.
