Mulki Mukund Kamath, a natural storyteller with a joke for every occasion, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025 in San Ramon, CA. He was 83 years old.
Mukund was born to Ramanath Kamath and Uma Bai in the town of Mulki, Karnataka, India, the third of six children. After high school, Mukund attended St. Aloysius College, Mangalore and UVCE, Bangalore, where he studied electrical engineering. He married his wife Lalitha in 1974 and they immigrated to the U.S. two years later. They lived in Union City until 1980, then moved to San Ramon, where they raised a daughter and two sons. Mukund worked as an electrical engineer for companies including Tata Steel (India) and Bechtel Corp. and Jacobs in the San Francisco Bay Area before retiring in 2013.
Mukund enjoyed making his family and friends laugh and loved to share stories from his childhood and college years. He was enthusiastic about complex math puzzles, which he regularly solved without breaking a sweat, as well as astronomy and professional tennis. He often could be found listening to Hindi film music composed by Shankar-Jaikishan or watching spaghetti Westerns starring Clint Eastwood, among many other movies.
Mukund is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lalitha; daughter, Sheela (husband Daniel); sons Sudhir and Sampat; sisters Vatsala and Vijaya (husband Mohan); and brother Laxman (wife Mamata). He was preceded in death by his parents Ramanath Kamath and Uma Bai and his older brothers Vaman and Vaikunt.
