Chris Beratlis

The son of Greek immigrants, Chris Beratlis was born December 22, 1934 in Livermore, CA and lived in Pleasanton his entire life. He had four sisters and three brothers. Three of his sisters survive him. He was married to his wife Glenda in 1965 and they had two sons, Christopher and David. David predeceased his parents in 1990. Chris worked in his family?s cheese factory at the end of Santa Rita Road as a young man. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was justifiably proud of his service. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He particularly enjoyed his son Christopher and his wife Erika and his grandchildren Jayme and Jared, his morning coffee shop ?guys? at Vic?s who came to be known, kiddingly, as ?the world problem solvers?, his Friday lunch ?Grub Club?, his abalone fishing trips, the Lake Shasta houseboat trips with his friends from the Sierra foothills. Chris was actively involved in civic affairs and at various times served on the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Pleasanton City Council, the Alameda County Fair Board of Directors, and with the Pleasanton?s Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Association in efforts to preserve, protect and enhance Pleasanton?s downtown commercial and retail activities. He successfully spearheaded an effort to convince the City of Pleasanton to take over the local cemetery which had fallen into disrepair and is now known as the Pleasanton Pioneer Cemetery. Chris was a remarkable man of many interests and enjoyed life fully. He was sophisticated but had simple tastes. He greatly enjoyed cooking, winemaking, tending his sheep, growing his own vegetables and competing with his friends for the earliest and biggest tomatoes and frequently donated his chili cooking skills to various charitable efforts. His upbeat, optimistic attitude and engaging grin were difficult to resist and he had a wide circle of friends from all walks of life. He worked hard all of his life and accumulated considerable wealth, particularly in commercial and residential real estate holdings, but was always accessible and his advice and counsel on financial, political and other matters were much sought after by friends and family. He is survived by his loving wife, Glenda, son Christopher and his wife Erika, grandchildren Jayme and Jared and three of his sisters. His presence in this community will be sorely missed and his family and many friends mourn his loss. In lieu of flowers Chris and the family would prefer a donation to the David K. Beratlis Scholarship fund at Valley Community Bank to benefit local high school students. Visitation Monday, April 16, 2012, 5:00 ? 9:00 pm, Graham-Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First St., Pleasanton. Funeral Mass, Tuesday, April 17, 2012, Noon St Augustine?s Catholic Church, 3999 Bernal Ave., Pleasanton, CA. Burial to follow at Pleasanton Pioneer Cemetery. Reception to follow at the Veterans Hall on Main St.
