Long-time Pleasanton resident Dave Gamble, a gentleman in every aspect of that word and a committed Christian, went home to be with the Lord in the arms of his wife on Nov. 29, 2023. He was 95. Dave was known for his gentle nature and concern for family, friends and strangers alike. He was a member of GraceWay Church (formerly Pleasanton Presbyterian) for more than 50 years and loved serving there. He was an elder and loved to cook for large gatherings as well as helping on projects to upgrade the facility and the grounds. He also volunteered at Open Heart Kitchen for many years. He graduated from San Diego High School where he excelled at quarterback on the football team. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in both Guam and the Philippines. After completing his Navy tour, he returned to San Diego and graduated from San Diego State College with a bachelor’s degree. While attending college, he worked part-time for Sears Roebuck and Co. and then joined the company after graduating. That started his life-long career in retail. He was promoted to the corporate office in Chicago in 1961. While living in Chicago, he met Rosalyn Lingner and they married in 1969. They transferred to Northern California and made their home in Pleasanton. Dave managed in the Sears store in San Mateo. He fulfilled a life-long entrepreneurial bent by opening his own store, Gamble’s Home Accents, a beautiful domestics store in Pleasanton in 1977. He and his wife, Roz, operated it together, buying all the merchandise and running it all with love. His gentle demeanor was known to customers who simply called him “that nice man.” Owning his own business was part of the family tradition--his father operated a bakery and Dave worked there learning to bake and cook. After closing his local venture because of a recession, he returned to retail management at Hastings, Grodins and Macys. He was renowned for his knowledge of men’s clothing and conducted “dress for success” seminars for young men. He also was a skilled manager, dealing with people with care and compassion. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Roz Gamble, sons Rian and John Gamble, grandchildren Brady, Cooper, Therin and Parker, Holly and Kaylan, and great grandson Malakai Gamble. The family appreciates the care provided by Carefield Memory Care and Sonata Hospice. He will be interred at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA.
